Know what was running before judging what happened.

Keep a simple activity record

For every active channel, record the start and stop dates, campaign purpose, geographic targeting, destination page, budget and person responsible. Save significant creative, targeting and website edits. A channel name without an activity history is not enough to explain performance changes.

Connect the entry point to an enquiry

Use campaign UTMs where they are available, reliable forms and call tracking with the required notices and consent. Make sure source labels have consistent definitions. Organic Google Business Profile calls and paid Google Ads calls should not be silently merged.

Check the destination, not only the ad

A paid campaign may drive the right people to a page that has a poor mobile call button or unclear service area. When reviewing results, open the destination page on a phone and confirm a customer can reach the business without friction.

Be precise about what is measured

Impressions and clicks show exposure and visits, not new jobs. Call logs show calls recorded, not necessarily qualified enquiries. Booked work should be validated with the operating business when possible.

Decide what to inspect next

Where a channel gets visits but not enquiries, investigate relevance, site clarity and tracking. Where it gets enquiries but few bookings, investigate availability, follow up speed and lead fit.

APPLY IT TO YOUR BUSINESS

Put the measurement to work.

Start with the information you actually have. Document what can be measured, be explicit about what cannot, and use each review to decide the next practical change.

A reliable inventory of your marketing activity

Here is how to apply the idea to a real local service business rather than treating it as another marketing metric.

  1. Write down which Google Ads campaigns, Meta campaigns, local search work, web pages and content initiatives were active in the selected period.
  2. For each channel, list spend where applicable, objective, measurable enquiries, confidence in attribution and the next decision. Do not combine impressions with leads.
  3. If a channel has no reliable enquiry data, report that limitation. Set up measurement before using that channel’s claimed ROI to justify a budget increase.
