The working relationship

PLAN. BUILD.
KEEP LEARNING.

A marketing department should make the work clearer, not harder to follow. This is how priorities, delivery and measurement fit together.

Explore the method ↓

Start with the business. Then choose the work.

Which services need more customers? Which areas are worth focusing on? What can the business fulfil? How much can an enquiry cost before the economics stop working?

Those answers shape a useful plan more effectively than choosing an ad platform first. We agree on responsibility and scope before execution begins.

A clear sequence from the start.

Explore how a working relationship moves from discovery through delivery and review. The specific timing, services and communication arrangements are confirmed with each business.

Understand the business.

Understand the services, service areas, capacity and economics that determine what a useful enquiry looks like.

What should an enquiry cost?

Start with your actual job economics, not a competitor's arbitrary cost per lead. Job value, gross margin, acquisition allowance and the rate at which enquiries become paying jobs all affect the number.

We built one interactive calculator where you can adjust those inputs and immediately see the implied allowance. It lives on the homepage rather than being repeated here.

Test your assumptions with your own numbers.

Change each input to see how the expected cost per enquiry changes. It is a planning tool, not a prediction of market prices.

Reporting should change decisions.

Marketing reports should explain what was done, what the available records actually show and what deserves attention next. Vanity metrics should not stand in for qualified leads or confirmed jobs.

The questions a useful review answers

We agree on the reporting format and frequency with each client. The useful part is understanding what the numbers mean and what should happen next.

Defined scope. Clear responsibility.

Every engagement starts by agreeing which responsibilities Bluewater will manage and how the business will participate. Advertising spend, content production, website changes, account access, approvals and reporting expectations should be established before work begins.

Bluewater operates as the marketing department for local service businesses, not as a replacement for the owner's operational knowledge. The best work depends on both sides understanding what is actually happening.

A direct conversation is the right starting point.

Describe your business, the services you want to grow and the marketing you already have in place.

THE PRACTICAL DETAILS

What you approve. What we handle.

What do you need from the business owner?

Accurate service and location information, access or appropriate permissions for agreed platforms, a contact for approvals and feedback on the quality of incoming enquiries. Existing ads, analytics or website information can help establish a baseline.

How are priorities set?

We begin with the business objective, the services you want more demand for, relevant service areas, customer value, available capacity and existing performance. Then we agree on deliverables, channels, responsibilities and budgets.

What about advertising spend?

Advertising spend and management fees are distinct. The approved budget, billing arrangement, account ownership and permissions should be clear in writing before a campaign launches.

How will changes be approved and measured?

The working agreement should specify who approves major changes, what information is reported, when performance is reviewed, what counts as an enquiry, and which outcomes the business can confirm.

How quickly should results happen?

There is no universal timeline. Setup, approval, website quality, existing demand, competition and the available budget change what can realistically be learned in the first weeks. A proposal should state the schedule and what is expected during the initial period.

Do we have to use every service?

No. Scope is based on the work that makes sense for the business. A coordinated marketing department does not mean buying every channel at once.
